Overview
Listening is the ability to use what we hear. Johansen IAS is a precise and effective way of developing and improving listening skills to help people of all ages to focus effectively on what they hear.
Auditory processing disorders can affect development of speech, language and communication as well as reading and spelling, resulting in dyslexia and/or problems with talking and understanding. Johansen Individualised Auditory Stimulation (JIAS) can help to improve these difficulties.
Johansen IAS is an Auditory Stimulation programme which involves listening to music specifically designed to stimulate the nerve pathways into and within the brain – in particular the areas dealing with language. Children as young as three years old, adolescents and adults can all benefit from Johansen IAS. Johansen IAS can be of benefit to children, adolescents and adults with a variety of speech and/or language difficulties, both spoken and written (including specific learning difficulties and dyslexia)
JIAS
Benefits:
When the sub-skills for listening and learning are strengthened through listening to Johansen IAS CDs, language processing abilities can be seen to improve. Concentration, listening and understanding of language are enhanced as incoming information is dealt with more quickly and efficiently. Gains in reading and spelling are also often seen, as the ability to analyse the sound structure of words is strengthened, making decoding much easier.
What is involved?
Initally, the therapist interviews the parents/adult client to determine whether or no JIAS is appropriate in this particular case. Then the parents complete a questionnaire to facilitate the profiling of the client.
In accordance with guidelines, the client listens to the CD for 10 minutes every day. They listen to the same CD for approximately 6 weeks. At that point they return to the therapist who administers further audiological tests and customizes a second CD.
